2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV LT

2023 chevrolet bolt euv premiere redline parked at sunset near city skyline

EPA-rated range: 247 miles

It’s a shame the Bolt EUV is going out of production soon, because it represents the best value for money on the EV market right now. For under 30 grand you get a practical crossover with nearly 250 miles of range. You can’t beat that.

Chevy announced plans to reveal a new Bolt in 2025 complete with the company’s Ultium batteries. Considering America’s appetite for crossovers, we suspect the new car will be shaped similarly to this Bolt EUV. Hopefully the price doesn’t climb too much in the process.

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SE

2024 hyundai kona electric

EPA-rated range: 200 miles

Compared to Hyundai’s futuristic Ioniq models, the Kona Electric is more subdued and normal-feeling. At this low price, the Kona Electric offers a 48.6-kWh battery pack feeding a single electric motor powering the front wheels, rated at 133 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque.

2025 Volvo EX30 Single Motor Extended Range

volvo ex30

EPA-rated range: 265 miles

We did not expect to put a Volvo in this list, and certainly not in this spot as the third most-affordable electric SUV. It may be because the EX30 is extremely minimalist and cheap inside, with hardly any switches or adornments. It certainly doesn’t feel like luxury. Just like Tesla, the money instead goes to the powertrain’s 69-kWh battery, 268 hp, 253 lb-ft, and an impressive (for the money) 265 miles of range.

2024 Fisker Ocean Sport

fisker ocean

EPA-rated range: 231 miles (Mfr. Est.)

Fisker is barely hanging on as a company, but don’t let that stop you from its attractive and low-slung Ocean, which features a “California Mode” that opens eight windows (including two small rear windows and the hatch glass). A 17.1-inch screen, 20-inch wheels, and a panoramic moonroof come standard on this 275-hp EV. It’s hard to say how you’d receive an Ocean after ordering one, as Fisker says it’ll quote you the destination fee only when you’re ready to purchase.

2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard

volkswagen id4

EPA-rated range: 209 miles

While we’re not huge of the Volkswagen ID.4’s driving characteristics or interior appointments, it can still make a case for itself as an affordable electric SUV, coming in at just over $40,000 with 240 miles of range. The Standard trim powers the rear wheels with 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque.

2024 Nissan Ariya Engage

nissan ariya

EPA-rated range: 216 miles

Nissan cut the Ariya’s base price by $3600 for 2024. While the front-wheel drive Engage trim won’t thrill anyone, it’s easily the roomiest SUV here. The 63-kWh battery and single motor output 214 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. A healthy amount of equipment comes standard.

2023 Mustang Mach-E Select

ford mustang mach e

EPA-rated range: 247 miles

The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t a real Mustang, but it is a real accomplishment. It looks sporty (there are no door handles), drives well, and since there are so many examples in dealer inventory, you’ll be able to get one for thousands off MSRP. With 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, the base rear-wheel drive Select isn’t pokey. But it’s also less efficient than other SUVs on this list.

2024 Kia Niro EV Wind

2023 kia niro ev

EPA-rated range: 253 miles

The Niro is an uncommonly flexible car. It’s built with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric powertrain. New for 2023, it gets a handsome and conservative hatchback design versus the EV6. The Niro EV comes in only two trims with the same 64.8-kWh battery, 201 hp, and 188 lb-ft of torque going to the front wheels. Acceleration is adequate with a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds.

9

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range

hyundai ioniq 5

EPA-rated range: 220 miles

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 might look like a hatchback, but it’s far bigger than how it appears in photos. The result is a spacious, fantastic-looking SUV that’s not super expensive, but competitive when it comes to range. The base trim has only 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque but comes with dual 12.3-inch screens and 19-inch wheels.

10

2024 Kia EV6 Light RWD

2022 kia ev6 gt line rwd

EPA-rated range: 232 miles

The Kia EV6 is a most convincing Tesla rival. With its chassis and powertrain shared with the Ioniq 5, the Kia swaps the Hyundai’s retro looks for a spaceship vibe. The base single-motor Light is much slower than our PCOTY-winning EV6 GT, but it’s 20 grand less to start and has a longer range despite having the smallest 58-kWh battery in the model lineup.

2024 Toyota bZ4X XLE

2023 toyota bz4x

EPA-rated range: 252 miles

How is a Toyota the most expensive SUV on this list, pricier than a Fisker or a Volvo? Beats us. The real-world range is also poor and the charging is very slow, as we found out in a recent test drive. At least it rides well and offers all the comfort and functionality of a normal Toyota without taking any styling chances. The base front-wheel drive XLE has the most range in the lineup in return for just 201 hp and 196 lb-ft of torque.
