THE STORY

There is something to be said for keeping a car long-term. This rare, attractive 1970 Oldsmobile 455 W-30 442 Coupe has been with its most recent owner for 31 years. This car is one of 1,304 hardtop (holiday coupe) examples built with the automatic transmission during the 1970 model year, and, as most people know, the W-30 meant the high-compression version of the 455 engine. Showing the effects of a comprehensive restoration, this special vehicle is coming to market for the first time this century at Indy.

Like a number of its peers, the engine block was replaced early on. Installed beneath the Force Air fiberglass hood is a service replacement 455/370 HP V-8 block with no VIN stamp, and the car’s original carburetor, intake, heads and manifolds are all here. The red inner fenders stand out and the car has factory decaling applied to the engine bay as well. This was backed by the factory code OW M40 Turbo 400 automatic transmission plus the original code TO (G88) 3.91 Anti-Spin differential equipped with factory heavy duty axle shafts, an option exclusive to W-30. JL2 power brakes with front discs and N47 Vari-Power steering are here as well.

This topshelf Olds is refinished in its original Sebring Yellow paint with black hood and side graphics that match its black interior. One of the most upscale designs offered in any muscle car, the bucket seats are divided by a sports console hosting a factory W26 Hurst Dual Gate shifter. Woodgrain-themed accents are used throughout, with this car equipped with the N34 4-spoke Sport steering wheel and U21 Rocket Rally Pack tachometer and gauges. Outside are the small W30 tags beneath the 442 front fender tags, the desirable N66 Super Stock II wheels and a set of original Goodyear G70x14 Polyglas tires.

The 1970 model year came and went, and so did the W-30’s stout 10.5 compression when all the GM brands cut compression ratios in ‘71. We see many reasons that this car has been treasured, and its next caretaker will likely find even more!
